Psst. We're potty training...

...and it's actually kind of fun!  Don't get me wrong, there are still some tantrums and the whole getting peed on thing, but it isn't as horrible as I always imagined that it'd be.

I had told myself the past few months that I'd wait until after the holidays and all of the traveling to start the daunting task of potty training my stubborn, animal of a two year old.  I figured it'd just be easier after all of the hoopla was over.  However... last Thursday I saw that potty sitting in his closet and thought, Ehh.  Why not?!  I guess boredom played a part, too.  ;)  Why not introduce a new project for both of us?

So, I started Friday... and HE DID IT THE FIRST TIME!  I couldn't believe it.  I was so freaking proud of him.  Haha, it's so funny to say, but I was just awed at the whole thing.  I could tell he was proud of himself, too.  He went 3 more times that day successfully.

Saturday was a bit of an adjustment having Daddy home.  After all, he and Mommy had almost perfected (ha!) the process the day before.  So he only went (successfully) 2 times.  Sunday was better with 3, and today we were back at 4.

I'm finding that it's mostly about timing and guessing on my part.  "Do you have to go potty?"  "Do you need to go poopy?"  "Want to try to go pee pee?"  A lot of the time these questions are met with high pitched screaming and running away.  However, there are times when Logan does come up to me with a very concerned look on his face, grabs his stomach, and says, "My tummy..."  This, my friends, means he has to perform a #2.  But it's good!  He's already telling me!  #1 is another story.  That's where all of the guess work comes in.  But for only being on our 4th day of training, I think he's done pretty darn well!

So... what has this mommy learned during this process?  Read on!

  • They really should make potty seats a little bigger... That part that goes over his boy parts is TOO small.  I have to awkwardly arrange him on the seat and open his legs and scooch the cushion thing over it... lol.  That, or I get a nice spray.  Yeah, a bigger seat would be great.
  • Aforementioned boy part - he calls it his wheel.  Pronounced, "Wheee-hul."  I died.  I die every time he says it.  "That's my wheee-hul."  "Don't touch my wheee-hul!"  lol.  Sorry buddy, I'm just trying to arrange it so you don't spray me... But seriously.  A whee-hul?  Where did he get that?!  It's so funny and so CUTE when he says it in his raspy little 2 year old voice.
  • Potty time is actually a good time to bond and learn.  Weird, right?  But seriously, you have his undivided attention.  He's just sitting there and looking at you, and you're just sitting there looking at him.  It's a good time to practice counting, identifying objects, discuss the whee-hul...lol.  But again, seriously, I think I've had some really good conversations with him when he's confined to this spot without twenty-seven million outside stimuli demanding his attention.
  • If Skittles were not already amazing enough, they work WONDERS.  Logan gets "Two skittos" after he uses the potty.  I haven't been doing this every single time he's successful, but have been making it more of a intermittent schedule of reinforcement, if you will.  By this, I mean giving them to him when he actually remembers.  ;)
  • Dumping the bowl into the big toilet is a reward in itself.  "Gotta dump it out!"  He reaches for that thing so quickly after getting up to dump it out.  If I didn't get a hand on it as fast as I do, I'm sure that it's contents would be all over the floor.  Ick... but he LOVES it.
  • My dad and brothers will be so proud... Logan has already developed a good sense of potty humor.  After he goes #2, he'll let me know if it's "the big one" or "the little one".  Ha, he likes to distinguish them from one another.
  • I have such a polite little man.  After Jake or I say, "Thanks for letting me know you had to go!", he says, "Thanks for helpin'!"  So.  Cute.
  • He's so proud of himself when he does it.  I mean, he's not bursting like his crazy momma, but I can tell that he is proud.  It's so cool to see him accomplishing something new and showing pride in it.  Who knew poop and pee could evoke such emotions?
  • My little baby boy is growing up.  Although I am SO proud of him, I'm also a bit sad.  I just can't believe that he's not a little bee anymore.  I've actually gotten in the habit of sneaking into his room a few hours after I've put him to bed and picking him up to rock him for a bit.  He's just growing too fast... so much so that I just need to steal these minutes when I can.
So there you have it.  He's not a professional, but he's well on his way!

Sounds like you're off to a wonderful start! I love that he calls skittles, "skittos." Too cute!

My friends and I were just talking about being little and growing up last night. It is so bittersweet.
Wishing you and Logan many more happy potty visits :)
    And a very happy Tuesday!

  3. We have been getting our little guy used to the idea and tomorrow we are starting seriously...so it's funny you posted this. I read in a book that its easier to ignore the little boy shield and instead teach them to put their little boy parts down while they pee. Something to try! Keep us all posted cause I would love to hear your suggestions and experiences as you go along! :-)
